Very nice heavy duty Z-Wave smart switch that handles both 120V and 240V loads
The Aeotec ZW078-A Heavy Duty Z-Wave Smart Switch is well made and just feels solid. There’s a heft that gives confidence that it’s well made and it’ll last. Wiring is straight forward and it’s quickly recognized by Z-Wave JS. We’re using it to control a standard US water heater which only has L1 & L2 and it works perfectly. We can now shut off the water heater when we go on vacation and turn it back on a few hours before we return home.Sadly there’s a lot of mis-information floating around in the reviews by the uninformed. This switch works with both 120V as well as 240V loads. 120V needs a neutral wire but 240V does not. Refer to the the manual for proper wiring based on your particular use case.

Well made Z-Wave controllable switch for pool pumps and other high current electrical devices
If you’re looking for a Z-Wave switch to control your pool, hot water heater or other high current electrical device your choices are limited.Leviton sold a product (CA3750) but has been discontinued and did no operate reliably (these units frequently lost their pairing to your Z-Wave network and required frequent reprogramming).GE sells a product (which I have no experience with installing and using)Then there’s this product, the Aeon Labs switch.First, as the photos reveal the switch is contained in a plain white square box. It is IP44 rated meaning it is “protected from water spray from any direction.” Can it be used outdoors? I’d say maybe. The enclosure is certainly not a durable as a Nema 3R rated enclosure which offers protection from rain, wind, dust, etc. Mine is installed in my garage, I would probably not install this unit directly outside without another enclosure of some sort.Securing wires to this switch is a bit interesting. Typical Nema 3R enclosures can use a typical Romex wire clamp. For this product both wires come up into the product through rubber grommets at the bottom of the unit that you must slice open with a knife or razor blade. Inside the box are 2 plastic clamps secured by threaded screws (there is both a threaded metal screw and bolt vs a metal sheet metal screw screwing into the plastic of the enclosure) which provides a strong clamping to the box.Wiring the product was also a little interesting. The product comes with a number of wire terminal crimp connectors. I chose not to use these connectors and attached the 12-2 wire directly to the switch. I also had to spend a little time studying the manual to determine which terminals on the switch to use for a single pole circuit.Operating the switch of course can be through your Z-Wave system but there is also a button on the switch to operate it manually. When you push the button the switch energizes the circuit and a red LED illuminates. One odd thing about the design here is when you install the cover, the switch is not visible or clearly marked and to operate the switch you simply press on the front top of the cover. Pushing hard enough will depress the button on the switch inside the cover and the light from the LED will shine through the plastic informing you that the switch is energized. Finally, one added bonus of this switch is it reports energy usage to your Z-Wave controller. This could be interesting information for some people.Bottom line: This is a well made product that works reliably. I would definitely buy this product again.

So far so good, it does function like a switch.
Picked this up hoping to reduce energy consumption by my water heater when nobody is home. I have it paired to my Smartthings v2 hub. First thing to note, the instructions leave something to be desired.First step is cut the power to the circuit. I’ll say that again, cut the power to the circuit. Take a jolt of 240vac and you won’t have a good time. After you turn the breaker off, check to make sure there really is no power at the circuit location. Double check it. If you’re not sure, make sure your life insurance is paid and up to date and your affairs are in order.Installation is pretty straight forward if you’ve got some electrical experience. The package includes ring terminals for 10ga and 8ga wire. I didn’t use them since my wire is solid and the connections are intended for a slip under fit. I think the ring terminals would be harder to use given the space and stiffness of the wire. The switch includes a pair of seals for lack of a better word through which your wire penetrates. I’m really not sure what value they offer since they don’t actually seal. You’ll note a pair of clamps to hold your wire down. These are plastic and again I don’t see any value to them. The only thing holding the wires in place really is the terminals, not the clamps, so you don’t get functional strain relief. If the wire is likely to have any strain for any reason, secure it. Mine isn’t likely to, but I may still make changes eventually. The switch has terminals for two loads, ground, and neutral. For my water heater, there is no neutral. Connect everything up with the white wire going to L2 on both sides and the black to L1. Ground goes to ground in case you weren’t sure. The instructions advise having whatever appliance you’re connecting turned off when you restore power to the circuit. I attached to my water heater and it doesn’t have a power switch. I turned the breaker on and while I walked back over to the switch location (next to my water heater) got the Smartthings app open on my phone. Initially it didn’t find the switch (light on the switch was blinking). I did a power cycle on the switch and it connected. I don’t know if that was coincidence or causational. The hub saw it for what it is and I was able to turn my water heater on and off from it. I found a custom device handler on the Smartthings board which offers some additional “stuff”, I reverted to the default one for simplicity. Additional searching on the Smarthings board revealed a smartapp which allows me to run a custom schedule on the switch. It’s been only 24 hours after install so I don’t know if I’ll see a return on my investment or not. I do see some geeky satisfaction however, and that’s worthy to me.I deducted a star for three reasons – the instructions are poor, the seals are useless, and the strain relief is flimsy. I’d buy it again however even with these caveats. Time will tell how long it lasts.

Update: switched from wink to SmartThings and this still works like a charm!I purchased this to be used with my hot water tank so that I could be able to remotely turn it on and off. Installation was straight forward and connecting it with my Wink hub was also fairly easy.Since installing this device I no longer have to manually turn my water tank on and off and have set up a “robot” to have the heater come on a schedule, this has resulted in significant energy savings for me.

Worked perfectly as advertised. The only improvement would be if it had an external switch. Great product.
