Cavernous storage, quiet, so far so good
I found myself in need of more space for my home media server so I decided to go big and splurged for this 8TB drive. As it turned out, I had to also buy a new external box because the one I had could only support up to 4TB. The drive works as expected, it’s nice and quiet and runs relatively cool. I have not tested the speed but I can say that it’s plenty fast for streaming HD video. I haven’t had it long enough to comment on the long term reliability but I can say that it has been running 24/7 for the better part of a year without a hiccup. Every hard drive manufacture has made a few turds but lately Western Digital has been my go-to and this has not disappointed.

Plenty of space and then some.
I needed a good, reliable and spacious drive for backup of my media. My previous drive died and took my data with it. Fortunately, I backed it up to tape before it stopped working. I had purchased WD drives before, and knew their reputation for quality and longevity. So, I got this to put in an external enclosure and I never looked back. I have plenty of space for new media and the the reliability of WD. What more could one ask. I highly recommend this drive. It just works.

Excellent Internal HDD for Mining Burstcoin
I had a couple of these drives for my NAS. After 2 years of working smoothly I wanted to go with these drives again. Ordered three of them however I didn’t need them right away. Instead I have installed these hard disk drives into my computer and until I need more space they will be mining Burst coin for me. Which means making free money as long as the pc is on…At the current difficulty one of these drives should mine 300 Burst Coin. It makes 6 dollars worth of Burst. It may not sound much, but you would know that the whole market is down if you follow crypto coins. So 3 months ago it was making 18 USD for one month. At the current price it will pay itself in 4 years. If market was not down, roi would be 1.5 years. Or you may use these drives for one year and consider your earnings as discount. Or you just hold your coins as investment and sell at a higher price. It’s up to you. I just wanted to let you know that you can make use of available free space. It’s better than just sitting, let your disk work! ;)But average Joe should stay away from Seagate hard disk drives. It takes long time to prepare your drive for mining.

Noisy hard drive; beware of warranty issues if you buy on eBay
So far two problems:1. I’ve bought a new 8TB disk on eBay. Had to go through several escalations with WD support to get it on warranty (at first it was checking out as “out of warranty”). This seems to be a hard drive manufactured in/for some other country (“out of region”), which is still a brand new serviceable disk.2. For now I am using it in external USB enclosure as a backup disk. It produces a super-annoying vibration buzz. It’s louder than my server’s case fan, power supply fan, CPU fan even when the case is open, and any of the other 5 hard drives (most of them smaller size WD Reds), again with an open case. It’s not the kind of seek sound you’d hear when disk is actively reading/writing, especially at random. It’s a steady buzz that ALWAYS comes just from idle spinning. I have a 20-35 db hearing loss, and this buzz could annoy me without wearing my heading aids, that’s why I think it’s something notable to mention in review. I usually to keep my disks always on, but I am hesitating to enable standby on this one. Note: it’s not a loud buzz. It’s just steady and annoying. It’s different frequency than the hard drive sounds I used to.Otherwise works fine, looks like a regular WD Red drive, just bigger size.

    I would like to mention
I bought two of these hard drives, a 4 tb and a 8tb one. I would like to mention, that amazon could do better on the packaging for these drives. The put air bags to stop it from moving vertically, but they didnt cover the side to side, which still means it could still be banged around. The good new is, drives when they aren’t on, a shake here and there won’t damage them. It would have to be a pretty damn huge impact, but even then. Anyways these drives have work perfectly. Both have not died, and its been a while. They can operate 24.7 without much heat. Needless to say I will purchase more in the future.

4 Drives failing at nearly the same time.
purchased on 4/8/2017, for qnap NAS. (today 8/28/2023). Lasted 6 years. But here is the problem. I had 1 of these drives go bad around 8-9 months ago. I shutdown my NAS completely and stopped using it. I turned my NAS on once since this shutdown (around 4 months ago) and when I tuned it on, after around 30 minutes another of these drives started to not respond. Shutdown my NAS completely again until I could afford 4 new 20TB drives. With 2 drives down I was unable to swap out these drives 1 by 1 to replace this pool (pool 2). So I replaced my pool #1 with the 20TB drives hoping I could copy from pool 2 to pool 1 all my data (mostly movies). During my disc swap on pool #1 the other 2 drives stopped working, complete fail. It’s almost like an engineered failure.

Good choice for home/semi-pro NAS solutions
Put two 8TB WD Red drives in a Symbology DS216 NAS chassis. They fit perfectly and were installed in minutes. Set it up in my bedroom so I could keep an eye on it while it backed up the many terabytes of data spread across several computers all over my 4 story house. They have been under constant load for 2 days now. That isn’t long enough to know how these drives will hold up over the next few years, but the specs are good and from what I read, they seem to be widely recommended for home/semi-pro use (I have a recording studio in my house, so I’m not strictly just a “home” user). I can say that they are very quiet and seem to stay pretty cool, even after 2 days of constant write load. So far, so good. Very happy with the price, shipping and product quality.

I bought eight 8TB drives in May 2017 from Amazon for 4-bay JBOD’s–zero problems
I would never buy drives from a third party (other than Amazon) due to the warranty. Since these are all individual drives for data (no RAID), 5400 RPM is adequate and keeps the power and heat lower than 7200 RPM drives. I have had no errors reported and no noise issues.

I’ve purchased 3 of these 8TB drives for my Synology NAS and so far they are working like a charm.I’ve had no sign of the noise and DOA issues that others have mentioned.I have to admit to chuckling at some of the one star ratings. For goodness sake, the disk being resposible for corrupting the PC’s BIOS; I think the PC needs to be taken away from these people before they blame it for Brexit as well! 😜

    Does the job.. noisy though.

  13. Nestor
